Elizabeth's Inquiry- Marshmallow





1.  Why do marshmallows expand in the microwave?



  • I learned that marshmallows expands when they get hot.
  • I learned that marshmallows have sugar foam in them.
  • I learned that marshmallows are filled with air.


3.  My hypothesis:  A marshmallow expands when it is heated.

5.  I see that it is flat. It is chewy.  It feels bumpy.
I notice that it is flat and almost stuck to the paper towel.

6.  I learned that marshmallows have foam sugar and that's why they expand.  I learned that as soon as the microwave is turned off, the foam collapses.  I learned that microwaves heat the water in the foam and the trapped air causes the marshmallow to swell up.  My hypothesis was right.

             

Landin's Inquiry-Salt

1.  Why do we add salt to food?

  • I learned that  when you put two pinches of salt it tastes like sprite.
  • I learned that when you put salt in tonic water it fizzes.
  • I learned that when you put 2 half teaspoons of salt it tastes bitter.


3.  Hypothesis:  Salt gives food flavor.

5.  At first it was ok.  Then we added two pinches of salt and it tasted like Sprite.  Last, we added two half teaspoons of salt and then it was really salty.  

6. My hypothesis was correct.  Salt gives food a different flavor.  Salt makes things taste less bitter as long as you don't add too much.

Cody's Inquiry-Marshmallow



1.  Why do marshmallows expand in the microwave?

  • I learned that marshmallows expand because of the sugar.
  • Also, the microwaves help too.
  • There is air trapped in marshmallows.

3.  Hypothesis:  When the microwave gets hot, it helps it heat up.  Then the marshmallows start to expand.  Then the sugar helps the marshmallows expand.

5.  The microwave heats the marshmallows up. It tasted like it was hard.  It is hard on the outside.  It feels like it was very hard.

6. My hypothesis was partly correct.  The air trapped inside was heated and this made the marshmallow expand.  

Grace's Inquiry-Lifesaver


1.  Why do Wintergreen Lifesavers spark in the dark?


  • I learned that they spark in the dark.
  • It works best with wintergreen lifesavers.
  • You see miniaturized lightning.

3.  My hypothesis:  When you chew the LifeSaver, it sometimes clicks and that makes it spark.

5.  I saw some sparks. Other people saw sparks too.

6. The lifesaver cannot be sugarfree. When you bite the sugar crystals it makes it spark because it has sugar in it. The lifesaver has to be hard so that the sugar crystals can make it spark. The lifesaver mint has to be Wintergreen because the oil makes us able to see the spark.  When you put pressure on the sugar crystals it makes a spark and the wintergreen lifesaver makes the sugar crystals make sparks you can see.

  • I learned that is just a minature version of lightning
  • Lightning is a stream of electricity that excites nitrogen molecules
  • Wint-O-Green Life Savers is a very special substance that absorbs this ultraviolet
energy and transforms it into  visible light


3. Hypothesis: All the chemicals in the lifesaver make it spark.

5. I saw one spark.

6. Lightning is a stream of electricity that excites nitrogen molecules. Electricity provides excited nitrogen molecules with extra energy, which the nitrogen molecules then release as visible light. When you crush sugar crystals with your teeth, the pieces become positively and negatively charged. When sugar crystals are squeezed, pressed, or crushed, they give off electricity called piezo-electricity.  

Bekah's Inquiry~Yeast

1. Why does yeast make bread rise?

  • I learned that yeast makes C02 for bread to rise.    
  • Bread gets air bubbles in it when it bakes.  
  • Yeast also has gas in it.




3.  Hypothesis:  I think that bread rises because of the sugar in the yeast.

6. I learned that yeast makes CO2 for the bread to rise.  The bread gets air bubbles in it when it bakes because yeast has gas in it. That is why yeast makes bread rise.  My hypothesis was partly right.  The yeast eats the sugar, which makes the gas.

5.  It burnt the glass.  Then it cracked the popcorn.  Last we saw steam and water go up the tube.  

6. My hypothesis was right. The heat goes inside the popcorn and steam comes out. There is water in the middle of the popcorn. The steam goes up and the pressure opens it.
